In the Satsuma Domein, there was a unique regional governance system colld Tojo. This system required many small castles to be built throughout the domein. This contrasted with the prevailing system, ikkokuichijyou(one domein, one castle). To protect these castles, samurai lived around the base of them. There villages were known as fumoto. At Izumi-Fumoto you can see many of these old samurai haouses.
The old Izumi area was located in the northern part of the Satsuma Domein and was adjacent to the Higo(kumamoto)Domein during the Edo period. Due to its strategic location near the border,Izumi-Fumoto was built on the north side of the Izumi castle.
Two areas of the northern part of the fumoto still stand,Takayashiki asd Mukae. You can visit these areas and see the old homes, with their original iron gates, still intact.
